MP4, GIF, or Image: Which Format Should You Save?
Choose the format that preserves the idea without creating unnecessary file size or quality loss.

Choose MP4 for video
MP4 is the practical choice when motion, timing, transitions, or sound matter. It offers broad compatibility and usually stores video more efficiently than an animated GIF. Keep the highest useful version, especially when you need to inspect small details frame by frame.
If the Pin only uses a still image, downloading a video wrapper adds no value. Save the image instead.
Choose an image for visual details
Still images are easier to place in a moodboard, annotate, print, and compare side by side. JPG works well for photographs, while PNG is often better for graphics with sharp text, transparency, or flat color.
The format exposed by a public page may already be compressed. Avoid repeatedly resaving the file because each lossy export can reduce quality.
Use GIF selectively
GIF is convenient for short silent previews, but its limited color palette and larger size make it a poor archive format for many videos. If quality matters, keep the MP4 as your source and create a GIF only when a platform specifically needs one.
